Standing Together for Older Adults
As we welcome the month of June, we also recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 — a reminder that protecting the dignity, safety, and well-being of older adults is a responsibility we all share.
Elder abuse can take many forms, including financial exploitation, neglect, emotional abuse, and scams that target older adults. Unfortunately, these issues often go unnoticed, leaving vulnerable individuals without the support they need. Education and awareness are among the most powerful tools we have to prevent abuse and empower older adults, family caregivers, and communities to recognize the warning signs and take action.
At LEARN Idaho, our mission is to help people navigate the joys and challenges of aging and caregiving. This month, we encourage you to explore resources that promote safety, independence, and informed decision-making for older adults and those who care for them. Together, we can build a community where every older adult is respected, protected, and supported.
In January of 2023, JAVA, the Justice Alliance for Vulnerable Adults, was integrated into LEARN, and we created an entire channel in our Video Library dedicated to Elder Abuse Awareness. LEARN is proud to continue the great legacy of JAVA to prevent abuse of vulnerable adults through education.
LEARN also has a page on our website with videos describing Common Scams Aimed at Seniors. These 10 short videos will make sure you know how to identify these common methods aimed at taking advantage of older adults.
Community Events
Scam Prevention Community Event
LEARN partnered with HP employees to bring a Scam Savvy Seniors Training session to an Aging Strong Memory Cafe on May 7th. Tech Ed Program Manager, Tina Barnett, provided a great overview presentation on how to identify and avoid scams, and HP volunteers hosted small group conversations to reinforce the education. The small group conversations focused on:
- Common scams aimed at older adults
- Scam Spotter three golden rules
- Universal red flags in scams
- Resources for reporting scams
- How to freeze your credit
This was a great event that brought together three local organizations in support of protecting older adults in our community!

Let Your Voice Do the Typing
Typing on a phone can be a struggle — the keys are tiny, spelling gets tricky, and some days your hands are just full. But your phone already knows how to listen. With the microphone built into the Chrome app, you can speak your question out loud and let your phone do the searching for you. Think of it like having a helpful assistant standing by, ready to look things up the moment you ask. Just tap the microphone icon, say what's on your mind, and the answer appears — no typing required. It's especially handy for anyone with arthritis, limited dexterity, or who simply finds a small keyboard more trouble than it's worth.
Whether you'd like to try it yourself or you know someone who would benefit — a parent, a friend, a grandparent, or someone you care for — this short video walks you through it step by step, at a comfortable pace and in plain language.

Encore Book Club
The Encore Book Club is a welcoming space for senior adults to connect, engage, and explore books that inspire lifelong learning, personal growth, and new possibilities. LEARN Member Laureen Quick hosts a monthly discussion about a book related to aging, caregiving, personal reinvention, or community!
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt — A tender, quietly magical novel about Tova Sullivan, a widow working the night shift at a small-town aquarium, who forms an unlikely bond with Marcellus, a remarkably perceptive giant Pacific octopus.
